Creating Holiday Memories at Home

As the holidays approach, each family looks forward to their traditions. These typically focus on decorating the house, baking cookies, preparing special dishes, buying gifts, and of course, visiting with friends and family. The holidays are a wonderful time of year but what if you could capture more of the excitement, the memories, and enjoy them all year.

Creating Perfect Photo Opportunities

Everyone who has a smartphone now has a camera. Some are better at remembering to capture those special moments and with practice, your photos will get better. Everyone will snap more and better photos if you take time to create a few photo-taking spots around the house. And why not put a few props in a decorated box, with things like Santa hats, reindeer antlers, candy canes, and more.

Once you’ve got great photos, don’t make the mistake of leaving them on your camera. There are wonderful opportunities to make photo books at Picaboo, Shutterfly, and many others to pick from. Another approach to enjoying the best photos all year long is a photo wall somewhere in your home. Here’s a hint: hallways and stairs offer lots of great space, often unused.

Holiday Artwork Created by the Kids

When families gather the adults want to catch up on all the news. So, what do you do with the kids to keep them busy and happy? A little bit of planning and preparation will enable you to enjoy entertaining a lot more!

Pick art projects based on the age of the children. Younger children will be happy drawing with crayons and will love decorating the white tablecloth while older children might enjoy making snowflakes. There are thousands of holiday decorating ideas on Pinterest, so take a peek and you’re sure to find something that will inspire your children.

If your holiday gathering comes before Christmas, it might be the perfect time for kids to make gifts for those special in their life. You can buy inexpensive frames to mount their artwork plus fun materials to use in creating that something special.

Tablescapes to Wow Guests Before You Eat

Our dining rooms aren’t used much these days so it’s fun to dress them up for the holidays. Try saving money by using things you have and dressing them up. Add glitter to inexpensive candles, pine cones, seashells, or whatever you have buried in your closets. Stretch your time and money by using things that can be left out for several months to celebrate winter, especially those living in the south but missing the snow from your childhood. Use small, twinkling LED lights to add a special touch.

If you need more room on the table, you can decorate the dining hutch or fireplace mantel instead. Don’t forget to think through which areas will offer the best photo opportunities. Also consider that long after your guests have gone home, certain decorations can be enjoyed for many months.
